Role of a Mentor

The mentor will work alongside the classroom teacher, assist with the presentations and will be the one most familiar with the activities, topics and MindStorm kits. The mentor helps gather and maintain the materials required for the visits, as well as preparation for each visit. They are there to teach and guide the students along the way during the program, and most importantly they are there to interact with the students.

Who Can be a Mentor?

Mentors are highly motivated students at the college level who enjoy working with elementary age children.  Mentors do not need to be Math or Engineering students however basic knowledge of hydrodynamics would be helpful. A good mentor is one that has a well understanding of the material that they must teach; but they must also be familiar with the LEGO’s, the program, and a understanding of what works and what doesn’t in the water environment.  Also, patience with the children and the ability to encourage students threw their projects are some must in the personality of mentors

The Benefits of Outreach to Mentors

STOMP@HI provides a unique opportunity for engineering undergraduates to develop leadership skills as well as boost self-confidence. A mentor will benefit local children by providing them a unique experience that will foster their interest in science and engineering. Mentors
