Course: Math 242 (https://manoa.hawaii.edu/catalog/courses/math-242-calculus-ii-4/)

Title: Calculus II

Credit Hours: 4

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in 241 or 251 or a grade of B or better in 215; or consent.

Catalog Description: Integration techniques and applications, series and approximations, differential equations.

Textbook: Calculus, 8th edition, by James Stewart (ISBN 9781305616684).

  • Note: You must have a WebAssign access code to do the homework. Often the access code comes bundled with the book (if you buy a new book). If your book did not already come with an access code, you can purchase one by logging into Webassign and buying an access code. Note that every access code automatically gives you the ability to view the book online, so you do not necessarily need a physical copy of the textbook.

Subject Material: We will cover chapters 6, 7, 9, and 11 of the textbook.

Instructor: Evan Gawlik

  • TA: Rico Vicente

  • LA: Amanda Nitta

  • See here for office hours and contact information.

Format: This course will be online for the first two three weeks, and in person thereafter. There are lectures on Tuesdays and Thursdays and recitations on Fridays. Zoom links for weeks 1-2 will be posted on Laulima.

Calculators: Calculators are not allowed on any exam.

Out-of-class work: For a 4-credit-hour course, you are expected to spend at least 8 hours each week outside of class and recitations on work related to this course.

Exams: We will have 2 evening midterms and one final exam. The final is cumulative; the midterms are not.

  • Note the date and time of the midterms: midterms are outside of class in the evenings; the final takes place at 12 noon on Wednesday of finals week.

    • Midterm 1: Wednesday, February 16, 6:00PM-7:15PM

    • Midterm 2: Wednesday, April 6, 6:00PM – 7:15PM

    • Final: Wednesday, May 11, 12:00PM – 2:00PM

  • Taking the exams on these dates is compulsory; otherwise, a grade of zero will be recorded. Any student who has an excused, documented conflict with a test time must inform their instructor within the first two weeks of the semester when possible. Late requests will either be denied or will result in an automatic deduction from the exam score.

  • For those students with an excused absence for a midterm, there will be a make-up exam which must be taken during finals week. If you are unable to take a midterm for a valid reason, the score you attain in the final will count towards the missed midterm. The final exam cannot be taken before the scheduled time for any reason.

  • Conflicts arising from work or social obligations, or from personal travel plans do not qualify as excused absences. By registering for this course, you are agreeing to take all exams at the scheduled times.

  • Past final exams can be found here.

Homework: Homeworks will be due at 11:59PM HST on the dates specified on WebAssign. Please see the homework page for details on how to access WebAssign.

  • Late homework will not be accepted.

Recitation sections: All students are required to attend and participate in their weekly recitation.

Grading: The overall grade will be assigned according to the following weights:

  • 10% Homework, 10% Recitation, 20% Midterm 1, 20% Midterm 2 40% Final Exam

  • The following table gives a minimum grade for each score. For example, an overall score of 83% is guaranteed to earn at least a B grade.

A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D D-
99 93 90 87 83 80 77 73 70 67 63 60
