Math 252a Exam 2 Spring 2024
Ross's Lecture
Exam will be Wednesday, March 11, usual time and room
- The exam covers 7.4, 7.5, 7.7, 7.8, 11.1, 11.2
- Around 50% of the the exam will consist of a number of integrals which you will be expected to integrate. There will generally be no instructions as to which technique to use - you will have to figure that out yourself.
- This will include at least one improper integral. It might not be obviously improper, you might have to recognize it as such.
- You can also expect do need to do one or more partial fractions decompositions; this might or might not appear in an integral.
- Based on how long it has been taking some of you to work the quiz problems, you might want to set aside some time to build up speed on the integrals, for example by working blocks of problems in a timed setting.
- There will be 1-2 sequence questions (11.1). You should know how to determine if a sequence is increasing/decreasing/bounded, and whether there is a limit as n->infinity.
- There will be a problem on numerical integration. I will give you formulas.
- There will be 1-2 series questions (11.2). You should know how to exactly calculating the sum of a geometric or telescoping series, and how to show a series is divergent by showing the nth partial sum tends to infinity.
- There might be a page of short answer problems, where you might need to do things like answer whether certain integrals or series or sequences are convergent just by inspection.
- There might be some conceptual problems. This is Math 252a, not Math 242.
- In adition to the homework problems, the following (from the review questions at the end of the chapters)are worth looking at:.
- p577-579/5,19, 25, 28, 35, 43, 47, 48, 63ac, 65a, 71, 79
- p825-826/3, 5, 7, 9, 27-32
- The Concept Check and True-False questions at the end of Chapter 7 are also pretty good.
- You will not be allowed to use a calculator, except the one I provide. You will be allowed to use a crib sheet consisting of one side of one 8x11 sheet of paper with whatever you care to put on it, as well as a table of integrals which I will provide.
- There might be some conceptual problems
