Math 407 – Syllabus

Title: Numerical Analysis

Credit Hours: 3

Prerequisite: 243 or 253A, and 307 or 311, and one semester programming; or consent.

Catalog Description: Numerical solution of equations, interpolation, least-squares approximation, quadrature, eigenvalue problems, numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations.

Textbook: Numerical Analysis, 3rd edition, by Timothy Sauer.

Subject Material: We will cover chapters 1-7 of the textbook.

Format: This course will be online for the first two three weeks, and in person thereafter. Zoom links for weeks 1-2 will be posted on Laulima.

Homework: Homeworks will be due at the beginning of class on the dates specified on the homework page.

  • Late homework will not be accepted.

  • It is allowed and even encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but your final write up of your homework solutions must be your own work.

  • Some of the homework problems will require programming in Matlab. See the Matlab page for instructions on how to install and use Matlab.

Exams: There will be one midterm exam and one final exam. See the course calendar for the specific dates.

  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not have a schedule conflict involving the final exam. You should not enroll in this class if you cannot sit for the final exam at its scheduled time.

  • There are no make-up exams, except for documented medical emergencies.

  • No calculators will be allowed during the exams.

Grading: Your score in the course will be calculated as follows:

  • 35% Homework, 25% Midterm, 40% Final Exam
