Phd Students

My own PhD advisor was David Eisenbud. The students who completed a degree with me are:

  • Jay Yang, PhD 2018, now at Washington University.
  • Juliette Bruce, Phd 2020, now at Brown University.
  • Kevin Kristensen, MA 2020, now at Epic Systems.
  • Caitlyn Booms Peot , PhD 2023, now at Mt. Mary College.

  • In addition, I was the local advisor for two students of Steven Sam after he moved to UCSD: Hang Huang (now at Auburn); and Bobby Laudone (now at US Naval Academy).

I currently have five PhD students: Maya Banks (about to start an RTG postdoc at UIC), John Cobb (co-advised with Michael Kemeny, about to start an NSF postdoc at Auburn), Caitlin Davis, and Boyana Martinova and Christin Sum. If you are wondering if I'd be a good PhD advisor for you, I encourage you to do two things as soon as possible: first, talk to me (just email me and say "I am looking for an advisor, and I would like to talk to you about your research"); second, talk to my current or former students.

I am interested in a mix of commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and computation, and I tend to expect my students to eventually gain familiarity with: Eisenbud's Commutative Algebra book, Harsthorne's Algebraic Geometry book (or Vakil's book), and the computational program Macaulay2. Most of my students were not already familiar with all of these when they first reached out to me.

I strongly prefer to start working with students early in their graduate careers, preferably by end of their second academic year, if not sooner. I thus encourage students who are curious about working with me to reach out to me early in their graduate career. I am happy to discuss my research and help any student find a good advisor even if (as is often the case) I am not the best fit.
